The Bizarre Story of the People Who Turned Themselves Into Human Barbie and Ken

By: Stephen Thompson | Last updated: Nov 10, 2023

Barbie and Ken dolls were beauty standards for a long time. These dolls were yardsticks people of all ages used to measure their physical appearance.

The standard gradually changed over the years, but some people didn’t let it go. They altered their bodies permanently, spending huge amounts of money to look like dolls. Let’s meet the human version of Barbie and Ken.

Meet Human Barbie and Ken

Valeria Lukyanova and Justin Jedlica are two people who have gone to great lengths to turn themselves into dolls—specifically, human Barbie and Ken. The two doll-like humans are well known, and to a pretty good extent, they look like dolls.

In fiction, Barbie and Ken were a doll couple. So, if you think Valeria and Ken are also a couple like their fictional counterparts, you thought wrong. Valeria and Justin actually even have an ongoing dispute.

Valeria Lukyanova's Story

Valeria is a 5’7” Moldova-born model with Russian origins. She was born on August 23, 1985. She is currently a model in Ukraine and uses her looks to boost her beliefs about spirituality and the mystical world.

The Barbie doll has an hourglass figure with the proportions 39-18-33. Valeria, on the other hand, has body proportions of 34-18-34—pretty close, right? Valeria looks like a doll way more than like a human.

Cosmetic Enhancement or Not?

Valeria disclosed that she loved Barbie as a child but denied claims that she planned to look like the iconic doll. She said she only wanted to look sophisticated and beautiful—it was just coincidental that dolls were made that way too.

Many people would think she had plastic surgery to get her current look, but she denied it. She also dismissed rumors that she removed her ribs to acquire her tiny waistline.

Strong Beliefs and Firm Ideas

Valeria’s character disrupts the status quo. She was recently criticized for some of her comments about people of mixed race. “Ethnicities are being mixed now, so there is degeneration; it was not like that before,” Valeria said.

She blamed the prevalence of plastic surgery on the fact that people were settling for partners outside their race. Valeria has firm ideas against feminism, and for personal reasons, she says she doesn’t want to have children.

Introducing Justin Jedlica

Justin was born on August 11, 1980. He hails from Poughkeepsie, New York, and was given the title “Human Ken Doll.” Although flattered by it, he said he did not set out to look like Ken. Justin can be described as a lover of plastic surgery.

He has had an amazing estimated 780 cosmetic operations. These operations include brow lifts, cheek and lip enhancements, nose surgery, gluteoplasty, implants in his shoulder, bicep, triceps, chest, and many other procedures.

A Cosmetic Quest

Justin has spent more than $800,000 on these procedures and is keen on spending more. He wants to get to the point where he feels he has attained the best version of himself. Justin said he sees his cosmetic journey as art, and his transformation holds a deeper meaning than what people think.

He feels that people assume he is chasing after perfection. “People think my quest revolves around looks and being superficial, but I wouldn’t say that is what I aimed at in my life,” he stated.

Powerful Convictions

Justin, however, knows people will attack him for his choice, and he has made peace with that. He even said he has no problem using himself as the Guinea pig. That is how firm he is with his choices.

Unfortunately, Justin lost his brother, Jordan Jedlica, in 2019. Jordan died in prison, serving a one-year and six months sentence for breaking and entering. Justin uses his popularity to bring attention to his brother’s case because he suspects foul play.

The Feud Between the Human Dolls

Justin Jedlica and Valeria Lukyanova met each other in a television appearance in February 2013. This was when their feud began.

The two human dolls have conflicting personalities, so it is not surprising that they don’t get along well. When they met, they both had things to say to each other. Justin fired Valeria, saying she “shows herself off as a real-life Barbie doll, but she is just a hallucination that dresses up like a drag queen.”

A Subtle Clap Back

Before the TV appearance, Justin had considered Valeria beautiful. Though it seems her real-life form disappointed him. He later explained that he noticed she uses a lot of makeup and fake hair and looks rather plain once she takes them off.

Valeria, however, gave a subtle clap back. She said, “He would do better not to talk about who is plastic and who isn’t. I think he is handsome, but he overdid his lips.”
