The 2024 Met Gala’s Biggest Hits and Misses

By: Sydney Sampson Last updated: Jun 03, 2024

It’s time to judge celebrities’ outfits from the comfort of our couches – the Met Gala, fashion’s biggest night, is here.

The Met Gala is the annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The exhibit theme this year was Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. This has nothing to do with the classic fairy tale. Instead, it’s about celebrating pieces that are so fragile they can never be worn again.

This year’s dress code theme was “The Garden of Time,” based on J.G. Ballard’s short story. In it, Count Axel is attempting to ward off an approaching angry mob. He walks through his garden and picks a flower that turns back time. Eventually, he runs out of flowers and the mob descends on his villa.

We can expect ensembles that reference the natural world, time, and the decay of society as late-stage capitalism encroaches on our collective quality of life.

Let’s review the best – and most questionable – looks from the 2024 Met Gala.

Zendaya's Aquatic Attire

When naming the Met Gala’s Best Dressed, Zendaya’s name comes up every single year. As one of the event’s co-chairs, she did not disappoint. She wore a stunning blue and black striped Masison Margiela gown, invoking the colors of a stormy ocean.

Watching her walk the red carpet was like stepping into a lush garden, with blue and emerald hummingbirds, vines, flowers, and even grapes decorating her satin corset. Plus, that hand-embroidered corsage? Pure class.

Rags to Riches

Chloë Sevigny obviously took the time to read The Garden of Time. She arrived wearing a repurposed Victorian gown that was falling apart at the seams.

The dress bodice, visibly weathered and tattered, looks as though it’s been ripped apart by the angry mob. She’s the countess after the army tore the villa apart. Someone did their reading homework!

Mona Patel's Flight to the Top

This year’s Met Gala ‘It Girl” was a Hollywood unknown last week. Now, she’s the ‘mystery girl’ who wore one of the most talked about ensembles of the night.

Tech entrepreneur Mona Patel designed and personally recruited a team to execute her vision for the dress. All the details of the dramatic train and butterfly-shaped corset were hand embroidered. While the glittering beige butterfly dress would have been stunning on its own, closer inspection reveals a mesmerizing detail—the embellishments on her arms move.

An Icy Surprise

Camila Cabello graced the red carpet in a gold metallic dress and a very unusual handbag – a block of ice with a frozen rose in the center. It was perfectly timed so that at the end of the gala, the ice would have melted and she would be left with just a rose.

The dress could have multiple interpretations of the theme. It could be considered a fleeting beauty as the fragile skirt continues to fall apart as the night goes on. Or, it could be that she’s the countess in the story, and the mob has ripped her dress apart. Either way, we support anyone who follows the theme!

A Sandy Sacrifice

Tyla made a striking debut at the Met Gala this year. Complete with an hourglass prop and sand decals on her shoulders, came dressed as sand falling through an hourglass. Crafted from three different hues of sand, as well as glass and crystal studs, her dress was a masterpiece.

The form-fitting nature of the dress posed a unique challenge—Tyla was unable to walk up the stairs on her own and had to be lifted up the Met Steps. After the red carpet, she was cut out of the dress- leaning into the fleeting beauty theme. This dress can never be worn again.

Tulle for Days

Cardi B took the Met Gala spirit of “go big or go home” literally. The “black rose” dress and matching headpiece appeared to be crafted from an endless expanse of black tulle.

The skirt was so heavy it required a half dozen men to carry up the Met steps. We may never know exactly how heavy the skirt was, but Cardi guessed it must weigh at least 140 pounds.

Tea with Sarah

Sarah Jessica Parker’s outfit for this year’s Met Gala was nothing short of enchanting. In a matching gold lace hat, knee-high boots, and skirt, she came dressed for a garden tea party.

Carrie Bradshaw would be proud.

Met Gala or The Hunger Games?

Lana Del Rey came down the red carpet as a dying rose garden, complete with a crown of thorns that resemble elk antlers. This is the avant-garde, larger-than-life, citizen of the Hunger Games Capitol fashion that we’ve been waiting for at this year’s Met Gala.

The “Born to Die” singer incorporated both the garden theme and the fleeting beauty theme into a single, ethereal look.

It Takes Two (Or 70!)

The journey of crafting Gigi Hadid’s custom Thom Browne gown took a team of 70 to embroider the yellow florals and 2 million beads.

The skirt alone required a team of 40 people working for 8,500 hours to complete. The result? A stunning on-theme one-of-a-kind gown.

Lizzo's Questionable Headdress

Lizzo’s Met Gala outfit debuted in Weinsanto’s spring/summer 2024 collection, but it was altered personally for Lizzo. The fabric was dyed to match her skin tone and a hole was cut into the headdress so the camera could catch her face.

While we can see that there was an attempt to follow the theme with the florals, the execution is questionable at best.

Jaw-Dropping Sparkles

To quote Rihanna, supermodel Anok Yai shone bright like a diamond at this year’s Met. More specifically, she shone in a bodysuit covered head to toe in 98,000 blue and black Swarovski crystals.

Though the theme wasn’t followed – the most generous interpretation I can offer is that she’s a river running through the garden – she dropped jaws nonetheless.

A Beautiful Tribute

One of the best looks of the night came from British actress Alia Bhatt, in a stunning handcrafted custom-made sari. The 23-feet long train, studded with gemstone and glass beading took 163 people 1,905 hours to create.

She told Vogue it was “a nod to the ethereal quality of the garden in Ballard’s story but also a tribute to the exquisite, enduring craft of sari-making”.

Jeremy Pope's Messy Glam

Jeremy Pope made a memorable entrance at this year’s Met Gala, strutting the red carpet in a striped suit paired with a luxurious fur-lined silk robe and casually undone suspenders.

The whole ensemble seemed to be a glamorous interpretation of the count being attacked by the mob.

The Host Does it Best

What would a Sleeping Beauties theme be without Maleficent? Gwendoline Christie wore a dramatic velvet dress with a sheer striped opera coat.

We couldn’t tear our eyes off the Game of Thrones star, who looked fantastically evil and on-theme.

A Garden of Time to a T!

Jordan Roth’s handcrafted Valentino outfit was undeniably one of the night’s best. The President of Broadway’s Jujamcyn Theaters is always one of the Met’s best dressed, and this year was no exception.

He ducked the ordinary floral looks and instead arrived as a garden, decaying before our very eyes.

A Real-Life Painting

Nicki Minaj revived the iconic Pink Friday aesthetic at this year’s Met Gala, infusing the event with a delightful touch of camp.

Her yellow dress was hand painted to resemble an oil painting and adorned with 3D metal flowers. Truly a museum-worthy outfit.

Tale as Old as Time

Amelia Gray wins the award for the most ingenious outfit of the night. She wore a yellow slip dress topped with a luminous glass terrarium, complete with live flowers. Rather than Sleeping Beauty, it reminds of the enchanted rose from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Getting into the dress was no small task—Amelia had to be screwed into it, requiring a team of 15.

An Homage to Puerto Rico

Here’s another star who clearly did their reading homework. The Count from Ballard’s story graced the red carpet in an unraveling suit, meant to mirror the unraveling of the Count’s empire. And those Satan’s hooves shoes speak for themselves.

Adding a personal touch, his bouquet included the Flor de Maga, Puerto Rico’s national flower.

Beautiful Blossoming

Ayo Edebiri, one of the biggest breakout stars of the year, made her Met Gala debut in a floral lace gown that combines the themes of both garden and fragility.

The flowers were embroidered and painted by hand. With the 3D flowers, the dress itself appears to be blossoming.

A Dark Twist

Emma Chamberlain captured the fleeting beauty theme, with her fragile lace dress. The mocha-colored lace was meant to be an “apocalyptic” take on the Garden of Time.

Rather than soft florals, this garden is decaying with dead flowers, ferns, and thorns.

A Captivating Villian

A second Count Axel has entered the Met Gala. This time it’s Usher, wearing an Alexander McQueen cape and carrying a red blood-dripping rose. Beneath the cape, his black diamond-encrusted suit glittered with his every move.

Complete with his $5 million watch, he’s giving Disney villain.

Glittering From Head to Toe

Is it an ice queen walking up the Met Steps? No, it’s Mamma Mia! star Amanda Seyfried, in a head-to-toe silver ensemble with violet florals serving as a nod to the Garden of Time theme.

While her lipstick was intended to match the blossoming flowers on her skirt, the silvers represent a dying garden. What at first appears to be a headdress is her hair, which has been temporarily dyed to match her dress.

Putting the Phrase "Beauty is Pain" to the Test

Once again, Kim Kardashian has created a controversy around her Met Gala attire. She graced the red carpet with a silver metallic lace dress, a grey over-the-shoulder cardigan, and a frightening tight silver corset.

The videos of her struggling to breathe were deeply disturbing. In some videos, her lips appeared to be turning blue. In others, she gasps for air while trying to speak. Is this an acceptable price to pay for a ‘snatched waist’? From the same woman who, at the 2022 Met Gala, bragged about not eating sugar or carbs for three weeks just to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s dress? Enough.

A Literal Sleeping Beauty

When Elle Fanning heard that the exhibit was titled “Sleeping Beauties” she knew exactly what she wanted to wear. “I played Sleeping Beauty in Maleficent, so I was like, ‘Gosh, I have to pay homage to her a little bit,’” she said to Vogue. The sculptured birds on her shoulders drew inspiration from Sleeping Beauty’s animal friends.

She arrived at the Met in a shimmering translucent gown that resembled a glass statue in the garden.

J. Harrison Ghee Has Us Buggin'!

Of course, a Tony Award-winning Broadway star would bring the drama back to Met Gala fashion. J. Harrison Ghee showed up as the prettiest bug in the garden and gave us everything fashionistas love about the Met Gala. It’s over the top. It’s on theme! They look fantastic!

Snack Time Already?

The winner of the most unusual Met Gala handbag is hereby presented to Michael Shannon, who arrived on the red carpet toting a … bag of Balenciaga potato chips?

These aren’t your average Doritos, however, this snack has a $1,850 price tag. It’s a real accessory that you can buy from the designer brand. They have three ‘flavors’ – spicy chili, salt and vinegar, and cheese and onion. To make matters worse, for that price tag, it doesn’t even include any actual chips.

Between the uninteresting black suit, the overpriced chip bag, and the lack of adherence to the theme, we’re unimpressed.

Dress or Costume?

The Days of Our Lives actress rolled up to the Met Gala in a floor-length silver and pink sheer gown. But it’s the floor-length floral cape that draws the attention, completely covering her with 3D rainbow flowers.

While points are given for adhering to the theme, the cape is reminiscent of a homemade Halloween costume. Some of the flowers resemble shower loofas. For an event with a $75,000 entry fee, the last thing we want to see is cheap.

With that, the 2024 Met Gala has come to a close. Some looks have dazzled, confused, or disappointed, but all have left us thoroughly entertained.

More importantly, the dazzling event raised a record-breaking $26 million for the Met’s Costume Institute. All that’s left for us to do is eagerly await next year’s Met Gala.
