Social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has recently been the focal point of intense scrutiny. Elon Musk, the current owner, faces allegations of enabling antisemitism on the platform.

A Christian social justice group called Faithful America has taken the lead in voicing these concerns, sparking widespread debate. Its petition accusing Musk and calling for corporate intervention has attracted significant attention and added fuel to the ongoing controversy.

Their main contention revolves around their belief that the unchecked growth of such sentiments might endanger the Jewish community. The gravity of their concerns is evident in the petition’s title, “Christians condemn Elon Musk’s antisemitism.”

The Allegations Against Musk

The allegations are clear: Faithful America claims that X is permitting dangerous levels of antisemitism. By Sunday afternoon, its petition had already accumulated over 9,500 signatures, nearing the target of 10,000.

The organization’s stance is further backed by various stakeholders, including rabbis, academics, and Jewish organizations, who have called for advertisers to sever ties with the platform until action is taken.

Analyzing the Situation

Research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) provides some statistics that might explain Faithful America’s concerns. They found that 86% of hate speech posts reported were via X.

Specifically, out of 300 reported posts, 259 remained live on the platform a week after being flagged. Furthermore, 90 of the 100 accounts that posted such content remained active.

A Notable Increase in Hate Speech

Further research, this time from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), highlighted an alarming increase in antisemitic posts since Musk took over X in October 2022.

Their findings indicated a whopping 325,739 English-language antisemitic tweets from June 2022 to February 2023. This represented an increase of 106% between the three months before and after Musk’s acquisition.

Elon Musk’s relation with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) adds another dimension to the situation. The tech leader has made public accusations, suggesting that ADL orchestrated efforts to push advertisers away from X.
